  14. HP announces its first release of the Encina transaction management
  15.  
  16. software for the HP 9000 product line.  HP Encina/9000 ensures data
  17.  
  18. integrity which is critical to businesses running distributed OLTP
  19.  
  20. applications.  The product is layered on top of the HP DCE/9000 product
  21.  
  22. and is HP's strategic enabling technology for OLTP.  Using HP
  23.  
  24. Encina/9000 as a foundation, customers will be able to develop
  25.  
  26. applications using either the HP Encina/9000 Monitor or the CICS
  27.  
  28. monitor available later this year.

  34. HP Encina/9000 is targeted at industries such as financial services and
  35.  
  36. manufacturing where customers have built their businesses on OLTP
  37.  
  38. applications.  These environments demand data integrity since numerous,
  39.  
  40. distributed systems continually send transactions across heterogeneous
  41.  
  42. databases.  Customers need the assurance that these multiple
  43.  
  44. transactions will not corrupt one another.  Encina acts as a
  45.  
  46. transaction coordinator, handling the scheduling, queueing and load
  47.  
  48. balancing of transactions across diverse databases and hardware.

  52. The Encina technology was developed by Transarc Corporation and has
  53.  
  54. been licensed by HP as a software product for the Series 700
  55.  
  56. workstations and Series 800 business servers.  HP Encina/9000 adds
  57.  
  58. OLTP-specific features and benefits to HP DCE/9000.  These include:
  59.  
  60.  
  61. o     Two-phase commit -- an all-or-nothing execution critical to
  62. coordinating distributed transactions
  63.  
  64. o     Transactional remote procedure call (RPC) - a facility extension
  65.  
  66. for adding integrity into the DCE RPC
  67.  
  68. o     Logging, locking and recovery -- for updating or rolling back
  69.  
  70. multivendor databases upon transaction failure

  78. HP Encina/9000 is an example of transaction management software.

  80. Transaction managers have been around for many years in OLTP
  81.  
  82. environments.  CICS, for instance, is an example of this type of
  83.  
  84. software in the traditional IBM mainframe community.  Transaction
  85.  
  86. management can also be carried out by features within certain operating
  87.  
  88. systems or by distributed relational database technology.

  91. The Encina approach is a state-of-the-art approach to transaction
  92.  
  93. management.  It differs from traditional approaches in several ways:

  96. o     Encina is the only transaction manager based on DCE, the industry
  97.  
  98. standard for distributed computing.  A DCE foundation means that Encina
  99.  
  100. customers will not be locked in to a a single operating system or
  101.  
  102. vendor.  With endorsements by HP, IBM, and Sun, DCE has emerged as the
  103.  
  104. premier foundation technology for distributed computing.  This feature
  105.  
  106. also distinguishes Encina from the Tuxedo product made by USL and from
  107.  
  108. NCR's TopEnd product.

  112. o     Unlike the distributed database approach to OLTP, Encina
  113.  
  114. coordinates transactions across heterogeneous databases and hardware.
  115.  
  116. This frees Encina customers from being locked in to a single database
  117.  
  118. vendor.

  122. o     Encina's modular, client/server design gives customers a choice
  123.  
  124. in monitoring APIs. Customers can use Encina/9000 Monitor or the CICS
  125.  
  126. monitor.

  130. HP and IBM are the only hardware vendors providing Encina products on
  131.  
  132. their platforms today.  Encina is also available on Sun platforms, but
  133.  
  134. is not backed by Sun as a strategic product.  Transarc Corporation

  136. sells and distributes Encina on Sun platforms.

  139. HP's Encina implementation is the only Encina product on the market
  140.  
  141. which includes developer validation and debugging tools as well as
  142.  
  143. application templates.

  151. HP Encina/9000 went onto the CPL on May 1, 1993 and began shipping on
  152.  
  153. June 18. It has the same product number for both Series 800 business
  154.  
  155. servers and Series 700 workstations.

  159. To run HP Encina/9000, customers must first have HP DCE/9000 software
  160.  
  161. in place.  Customers should have already configured a DCE cell and
  162.  
  163. should have DCE Executive software in place on all nodes in the cell.
